The Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) consists of deputies who have been specially trained in negotiating with individuals that are suicidal, or have barricaded themselves and are threatening harm to others and/or themselves. The team will also respond to hostage situations within the county. CNT’s primary goal is to peacefully resolve these types of critical incidents through the art of communication. CNT works side-by-side with the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) during these critical incidents. Within the past year, CNT, in partnership with SERT, has successfully concluded several stand-offs with barricaded individuals without injuries to anyone involved.
The team conducts training within the agency and with partner agencies. Each member has successfully attended and passed multiple levels of advanced training in the art of negotiating stressful situations. Members serve on this team in addition to their primary duty assignments, such as investigations, patrol, and SROs. The team motto is “The Calm in the Chaos.”
